Style & Self Help: How to be an indie girl

Are you tired of following the crowd? Are you bored of conforming? Are you looking to go your own way? Well, whether you'd rather be a Cara Delevingne or a Zooey Deschanel, we've got you covered with our five step guide on how to find your indie girl vibe.

Okay, so the whole kinda point of being an indie girl is to be independent. It's right there in the name, you have to break away from the mainstream and go your own way. Trying to be an indie girl, it's so easy to fall into the trap of following the alternate girl crowd but then you miss the point... you have to find the parts of yourself that make you unique.

Glasses and statement hair
If you wear glasses... experiment with different styles and see which ones work for you. Glasses are something that can really become your unique trademark. The same goes for hair. If you have a particular style or colour, it can become the thing people identify you by and really grab people's attention. Your hairstyle can make all the difference in your blending in or standing out from the crowd.

Music
I live for music and spend way too much time listening to Tom Odell and Sleeping at Last. I've recently been going through an old Jake Bugg song faze. You can listen to both popular indie music and then search for some lesser known artists, YouTube is a great starting place. Local pubs are a great way to discover unknown indie bands. Your music taste should be unique to who you are and reflect what you enjoy listening to.

Clothing
It's about finding your own unique style. Try shopping at vintage shops. You can really take any mainstream fashion item and make it look unique though. It's just all about putting your own spin on things. This jacket is actually a dress, wearing it in a different way than it was meant to be worn allowed me to inject my own spark of creativity.

Tumblr
I feel like you're not living the indie girl life unless you go full out and create a Tumblr account. The moody aesthetics and alternative vibes start to drip into your conscience... not to mention the 90s memes and suddenly you find yourself walking around in beanie hats, wearing too much eye liner and ripped jeans because you really want to be the dark version of Racheal from Friends.

Get creative
This works if your job is creative. Maybe you're an artist or a shoe designer... or a photographer. That's cool, you have your creative side sorted. If that's not what you do for a living or even a side job... then take up a creative hobby. You can search on Meetup for pottery classes or learn African drumming... or something. It makes for an interesting conversation topic on a date too.
