How You Can Put Yourself First

Putting yourself first doesn’t come naturally to many people. In fact chances are you feel much more at home when your wants and needs come in at the bottom of the priority list after everyone else. Putting yourself first can often feel as though you are being selfish when this couldn’t be further from the truth.

When you prioritize your needs and show kindness toward yourself you will be experiencing greater levels of happiness and it will put you in a better frame of mind to be able to help others. It is important not to lose sight of the fact that you and your needs are just as important as everyone else.

Putting yourself first is vital and here are some ways in which you can do it.

You won’t be able to please everyone
This can be a difficult pill to swallow especially for the people pleasers. It is, however, an unavoidable fact, that no matter how hard you try, regardless of the compromises you make you will not be able to please everyone and the sooner you realize that the easier it will be to put yourself first. Everyone is different and everyone has unique needs and means of happiness. When it comes to making decisions, whether they are about days out or where you and your family are going to live, you need to remember that it is not incumbent upon you to please everyone. You have a vote and your say is just as valid as everyone else's so bear that in mind when making those decisions.

Do something ‘big’ for you
Sometimes the 15 minutes ‘me time’ a day isn’t enough. It just doesn’t quite cut it or scratch that itch that puts your needs first. There will come a time when you need to do something bigger, something that is important for you and that will make you feel good. Say, for example, you have long wanted braces to help improve your smile and confidence but have been too afraid to dip into the family pot to pay for them. Now is the time. Visit a specialty dentist such as Morris Dental Associates to see how they help you. There is no shame in doing something special to make yourself look and feel better, and don’t forget you too are entitled to spend money on yourself.

Surround yourself with people who make you feel good
If you are spending your time with people who bring you down, knock your confidence or leave you feeling deflated then it will have a knock-on effect on your mood, mental health, and wellbeing. People can be easily influenced and being around negative influences can be exhausting and destroying. Instead, you want to surround yourself with people who make you feel good, who build you up and bring positive vibes. These people will only have a positive impact on your life and wellbeing and before you know it you could start to thrive under their influence.
